Booking and drivers
What is the minimum age to rent a car?
The minimum age is 21, or 25 for premium cars, and the maximum is 90. Drivers aged 21 to 24 pay a young driver fee and drivers aged 70 to 90 pay a senior driver fee. Both are charged per day, vary by car category and are shown on your quote before you confirm.
How long must I have held my driving licence?
Every driver must have a licence issued at least 2 years before the start of the rental, and must bring the original.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
Not if your licence is written in Latin script, which covers the EU, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and most other countries. If your licence uses another script (Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese and so on), bring an International Driving Permit together with the original licence. The permit is a translation and is never valid on its own.
Can I add a second driver?
Yes. Additional drivers can be added online when you book or at the desk. Every driver must meet the same age and licence rules and show their licence at pick-up. Only drivers named on the contract may drive the car.
What is the minimum rental period?
One day (24 hours). Rentals are charged in 24-hour periods from the pick-up time. There is a 1-hour grace period after the return time; after that a new day is charged.
Can I cancel my booking?
Yes. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pick-up. If you cancel later than that, or do not show up, one rental day is charged. Unused days are not refunded if you return the car early.
Can I extend my rental?
Yes, if the car is available. Ask us in writing at least 24 hours before your rental ends, and the extra days are charged at your agreed rate. Please do not simply keep the car longer: an unannounced late return is charged a late return fee on top of the extra days.
Should I book in advance?
Yes, especially from May to September. Booking early gets a better price and a wider choice, and in peak season walk-up availability at Dubrovnik and Split airports is very limited. Automatic cars sell out first, so book those as early as you can.
Payment and deposit
Which cards do you accept?
Visa, Mastercard and American Express, both credit and debit cards. You do not need a credit card to rent with us in Croatia: debit cards are accepted on every rental. More on this on our debit card rental page.
Is there a security deposit?
Yes. A deposit is held on the card you use at pick-up, usually as a pre-authorisation, so the amount is reserved rather than charged. It varies by car category and is shown on your rental contract.
When do I get my deposit back?
We release it as soon as the car is returned with no outstanding charges. Your bank then has to process the release, so it can take a few days before the amount shows as available again. With a pre-authorisation there is usually no refund line on your statement, the amount simply becomes available.
What is included in the price?
The rental of the car, Standard insurance (third party liability, collision damage waiver and theft waiver), 24/7 roadside assistance within Croatia, VAT and airport fees. Everything else is listed on your quote before you pay.
What costs extra?
Optional items you choose: Premium insurance, tyre and windscreen cover where available, child seats and other equipment, additional drivers, and the young or senior driver fee where it applies. Fees that depend on your plans: cross-border (Green Card) fee, one-way fee, delivery and collection, and out-of-hours pick-up or return. All of them are shown on your quote before you confirm.
Insurance
What insurance is included?
Every rental comes with Standard insurance: third party liability (TPL), collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft waiver (TW). If the car is damaged or stolen, your bill is capped at the excess shown on your contract instead of the full repair or the full value of the car. The excess varies by car category. Full details on our insurance page.
What does Premium insurance add?
Premium insurance (SCDW) is an optional upgrade that removes the excess on most car groups, so a covered accident or theft costs you nothing. Luxury car groups keep a smaller residual excess. The price depends on the car category and is shown on your quote.
What is not covered, even with Premium insurance?
Tyres, wheels, windscreen and glass, the underside of the car, the interior and personal belongings. Tyre and windscreen cover is available on some cars and can be added online or at the desk. No insurance covers damage caused by the wrong fuel, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, or a driver not named on the contract.
What do I need to do after an accident for my insurance to apply?
Call the police to the scene and have an alcohol test taken at the time of the accident. This is required by Croatian law, and without the police report and the test the insurance does not apply: the excess cap stops working and you would owe the full repair. We tell you this upfront so you never lose your cover.
Step by step: what to do after an accident or damage
- If anyone is hurt, help them first and call 112.
- Make the scene safe and follow road safety rules.
- Call the police (192) and ask for the alcohol test.
- Call M.A.C.K. on the number on your contract.
- Write down the details of everyone involved and take photos.
- Fill in the accident report (European Accident Statement) kept with the car documents.
- When you return the car, add a short written statement of what happened.
What if the car is stolen?
Report it to the police and to us straight away. Theft waiver caps what you owe at the excess, but only if you can return the car keys and the car documents. Without them the theft waiver does not apply and the full value of the car is charged.
On the road
What is the fuel policy?
Same to same. You return the car with the same fuel level it had at pick-up, full or partial, so you only pay for what you used. If it comes back with less, the missing fuel and a refuelling charge are billed.
Is mileage unlimited?
It depends on the rental package, and many categories are unlimited. The mileage included is shown on your quote and written on your contract. Extra kilometres are charged per our price list.
Can I take the car to the islands or on a ferry?
Yes, but tell us when you book. Island trips and ferry crossings must be written on your contract. Without that written consent, the insurance does not cover damage on the islands or during the ferry crossing.
What if the car breaks down?
Call us on the number on your contract. Roadside assistance is included, 24/7, within Croatia. If the car cannot be driven, we replace it as soon as possible and within 48 hours at the latest. Do not have the car repaired without our approval.
Can I smoke in the car?
No. All our cars are non-smoking. Smoke or strong odours in the car are charged as a cleaning cost.
How do I pay motorway tolls?
Croatian motorway toll booths accept cash and cards. Tolls, bridge tolls and parking during the rental are paid by the driver.
What happens if I get a traffic or parking fine?
Fines from the rental period, in Croatia or abroad, are charged to the card you used at pick-up, together with an administration fee. This includes fines that reach us after you have returned the car.
Can I drive into Dubrovnik Old Town?
No. The Old Town is pedestrian only, and the surrounding area is a camera-controlled restricted zone. Entering without a permit registered to the car’s plate is fined automatically, and the fine is passed on to the renter. Park outside the zone and walk, or take a bus or taxi.
Pick-up and return
Where can I pick up the car?
At our desks at Split, Dubrovnik and Zagreb airports and in the city centres, plus other locations around Croatia. We can also deliver the car to your hotel, villa or apartment, anywhere in Croatia on request. Delivery and collection are charged depending on the address.
Can I pick up or return the car outside office hours?
Yes, when it is arranged in advance. Send us your flight number and arrival time and we will plan the handover around it. An out-of-hours fee may apply and is shown on your quote.
Can I return the car in a different city?
Yes. One-way rentals within Croatia (for example Zagreb to Dubrovnik) and to our offices in Montenegro and Albania are available. A one-way fee applies depending on the route and is shown on your quote.
What happens at pick-up?
We check the car together and note any existing damage on the check-out form. Check it carefully and take photos. At return we compare the car with the same form.
Crossing borders
Can I take the car to another country?
Yes, to Croatia’s neighbours: Slovenia, Italy, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro and Albania. Other countries may be allowed on request. Tell us when you book, because every country you plan to visit must be written on your rental contract before you leave Croatia. You cannot arrange it at the border, and driving into a country that is not on the contract voids all insurance cover. Read our cross-border guide.
How much does cross-border travel cost?
Cross-border travel has a fee that is not included in the basic rate. It is one fee per rental, not per country, and the amount is shown on your quote. Please note that roadside assistance is only available inside Croatia.
Do I need a Green Card to drive from Split to Dubrovnik?
No. Since the Pelješac Bridge opened in 2022 the drive stays entirely inside Croatia, with no border crossing. You only need cross-border cover if you go through Neum in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Are any countries not allowed?
Yes. Cars may not enter Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia and the former USSR countries, Turkey or Syria, or any other country that is not written on your contract. If your route goes beyond the neighbouring countries listed above, contact us before you book and we will tell you whether it can be approved.
Damage and wear and tear
What counts as normal wear and tear?
Small marks from normal careful use, such as light polishable scratches and stone chips under 5 mm. You are not charged for these.
What counts as damage?
- Body and paintwork: dents, impacts, scratches that cannot be polished out, missing aerials, damage to the underside, unauthorised repairs, residue from stickers.
- Bumpers and trims: dents, deep scuffs, loose or missing trims.
- Glass, mirrors and lights: chips and cracks larger than 5 mm, scratches on glass.
- Wheels and tyres: kerb damage to wheels, missing hubcaps, cuts, bulges or punctures caused by driving on a flat tyre.
- Interior: tears, cuts or burns, stains, heavy dirt, smoke or strong odours, missing equipment.
- Mechanical: damage from wrong fuel, ignoring warning lights, overloading, driving through flood water or off-road use.
