Things to Do in Župa Dubrovačka: A Local Guide Beyond Dubrovnik
Between Dubrovnik and Cavtat, Župa Dubrovačka has the beaches, the restaurants and the quiet that the Old Town no longer does. A local guide to Srebreno, Mlini, Kupari and Plat, and the drives worth making from them.
When people plan a holiday near Dubrovnik, a lot of them end up staying in Župa Dubrovačka, and for good reason. Sitting on the coast between Dubrovnik and Cavtat, it has the beaches, the hotels and the restaurants, without the crowds that fill the Old Town from morning until night.
Whether you are in a large hotel, a private villa or a seaside apartment, Župa works as a base for the whole southern end of the country. With a rental car parked outside, everything from the Konavle vineyards to the Pelješac Peninsula is within easy reach, and you get to decide each morning where the day goes.
Relax on Some of the Region's Best Beaches
Župa Dubrovačka is really a string of small places along one bay, and each of its beaches has its own character. Srebreno is the busiest and the easiest, with clear water, cafés and a promenade that fills up in the evening. A short walk along the seafront brings you to Mlini, which is quieter and better suited to a slow swim and a long afternoon in the shade.
Kupari is the one people remember. The beach is beautiful and the ruins of the old military resort standing behind it give the place an atmosphere you will not find anywhere else on this coast. Further south, Plat is the quietest of the lot, surrounded by greenery and worth the short drive if you want the sea more or less to yourself.
Enjoy the Local Food Scene
After a day in the sea there is not much better than a proper Mediterranean dinner, and Župa has plenty. Our own recommendation is Bottega in Srebreno, a relaxed place built on good ingredients and a Mediterranean menu that works just as well for breakfast as it does for a long dinner. It is the kind of restaurant locals keep going back to, which is usually the only review that matters.
Beyond that, the bay is lined with small cafés and seaside konobas where fresh fish and Dalmatian classics are always on the menu. Walk the promenade in the early evening and pick whichever terrace looks right.
Wander Mlini on Foot
Mlini is named after the watermills that once ran on the streams coming down off the hillside, and the old stone bridges and channels are still there among the plane trees. It takes about twenty minutes to walk the length of the village, past stone houses, small chapels and gardens, and it is the most pleasant twenty minutes in Župa. Bring a swimsuit, because the water at the end of it is as clear as anywhere on the Adriatic.
Stay Close to Everything
The biggest advantage of Župa Dubrovačka is simply where it is. Guests at the Sheraton Dubrovnik Riviera, Hotel Astarea and Hotel Mlini, and everyone in the apartments and villas around them, are a short drive from Dubrovnik Old Town, Cavtat and the Konavle valley, and about twenty minutes from Dubrovnik Airport.
That means you can spend the morning walking the city walls, have lunch by the sea in Srebreno and finish the day with a sunset walk around Cavtat, all without moving your suitcase.
Explore Beyond the Coast
The beaches are the reason most people come, but Župa is also a good starting point for the rest of southern Dalmatia. Drive inland towards the vineyards of Konavle and the family wineries there, carry on to Cavtat for the afternoon, or simply follow the coast road and stop wherever the view makes you want to.
Having the car is what makes this possible. The bus will get you to Dubrovnik and back, but it will not take you to a winery in Konavle at four in the afternoon or to a quiet cove you spotted from the road.
Why Choose Župa Dubrovačka?
Župa strikes a balance that is hard to find this close to Dubrovnik. You get a quieter place to sleep, a beach you can actually walk to, and restaurants that are not priced for the cruise ship crowd, while the historic centre, the airport and most of the region's best-known sights stay minutes away. It suits couples, it suits families, and it suits anyone who wants southern Croatia without queueing for it.
