A Hidden Gem of Natural Wines: Boutique Winery Vicelić on Pelješac
Spectacular views with an unforgettable taste of Pelješac. Every great bottle deserves an equally memorable journey, and ours began behind the wheel of a Škoda Kodiaq on the winding roads to the steep Dingač vineyards.
Every Great Bottle Deserves a Great Journey
Ours began behind the wheel of the Škoda Kodiaq, spacious, comfortable and perfectly suited to the winding roads of Pelješac, leading us towards steep vineyards where every row of vines tells a story shaped by stone, sea and time.
Tradition. Passion. Terroir. At Boutique Winery Vicelić these aren't just words, but the philosophy behind every bottle. The Vicelić family produces authentic organic wines that preserve the true essence of Pelješac and the unique character of the Dingač vineyards.
When you first enter the winery's location into Google Maps, you might wonder if you're heading into the middle of nowhere. The narrow roads and untouched landscape only add to the anticipation, making you think the journey itself will be an adventure. The best part? It is. And it's the kind of adventure that rewards you with one of the most breathtaking views on the peninsula.
The Škoda Kodiaq is built to take you beyond the city. Confident on winding coastal roads, comfortable on long journeys and capable when the pavement ends, it's the perfect companion for adventures that go beyond the ordinary.
Passion That Runs in the Family
A father and son welcomed us onto a small terrace that felt as though it was floating above the clouds. There was no traffic, no crowds, only vineyards, silence and the scent of summer carried by the breeze. For a moment, we felt like children again, discovering something truly special.
Their wines are made exclusively from Plavac Mali, grown on the steep, rocky slopes of Dingač without pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilizers. Every bottle is an expression of the land itself. The first pour was a delicate rosé, followed by a bold Dingač. Each glass spoke with remarkable clarity, every sip carrying the warmth of the Mediterranean sun, the minerality of the limestone and the unmistakable soul of Pelješac.
The "boutique" in Boutique Winery Vicelić isn't just part of the name. It defines their philosophy. Everything is produced in small batches, with complete dedication to every detail. The goal has never been quantity, but authenticity: wines that faithfully express the unique terroir of Dingač while respecting nature every step of the way.
We honestly didn't want to leave. While we were there, another couple of friends wandered in. They told us they had simply spotted the winery on Google Maps and hoped to find an authentic tasting hosted by the owner rather than a commercial wine experience. They couldn't have chosen better.
Mateo welcomed them exactly as he welcomed us, with warmth, genuine pride and stories that could only be told by someone who has spent a lifetime among these vineyards. Listening to him speak about his family's land, the wines they craft by hand and the heritage they are preserving made every sip even more meaningful. Our Škoda Kodiaq was waiting for us. We waved goodbye, already knowing this wouldn't be our last visit.
Europe's Most Exciting Wine Destination
Places like this still exist. And no, you don't have to travel to Tuscany or the French Riviera to find them. People like this still exist too, in Croatia, on the Pelješac Peninsula, in this beautiful corner of the world we're lucky enough to call home. The only question is whether we're willing to leave the main road long enough to find them.
Croatia may not have the scale or old-world prestige of Europe's great wine powerhouses, but that is exactly what makes it so attractive. It is a rare destination where ancient heritage, breathtaking landscapes and remarkable wines still exist without the crowds or the big egos. For travelers seeking something new, delicious and deeply memorable, Croatia is no longer just "up-and-coming." It is already one of Europe's most exciting wine destinations.
