Traveling Through the Balkans: What Drivers Should Know

Traveling Through the Balkans: What Drivers Should Know

The Balkans is a spectacular multi-country road trip destination. But while distances are short and routes are scenic, border procedures require special attention and careful planning. Here is what every driver should know before setting off.

The drive from Dubrovnik to Kotor is one of the most scenic on the entire Adriatic coast

Border Crossings Between Balkan Countries

Unlike most EU and Schengen crossings, borders between Balkan countries usually involve full border and customs controls. Even when traveling short distances, expect passport checks, vehicle inspections, and occasional delays—especially during summer tourist season.

Croatia ↔ Montenegro
Debeli Brijeg
Most popular crossing; busy in summer. Also Karasovići.
Montenegro ↔ Albania
Sukobin / Muriqan
Check seasonal hours; less traffic than Croatian crossings.
Serbia routes
Multiple options
Serbia–Montenegro, Serbia–Croatia, and Serbia–Albania routes available.
Check before you go

Waiting times can vary significantly. Check traffic and border conditions in advance, especially on summer weekends when delays of 1–3 hours are common.

Documentation Requirements

Border officials in the region are strict about documentation. Missing or unclear papers may result in delays or denied entry. Always carry:

  1. Valid passport ID cards are accepted only for certain nationalities and routes. A passport is the safest option.
  2. Driving licence (+ IDP recommended) An International Driving Permit is especially recommended for Albania and Montenegro.
  3. Original vehicle registration documents Originals are often required; copies may not be accepted.
  4. Green Card insurance Must clearly cover all Balkan countries you plan to visit.
  5. Advance notification confirmation If driving a rental vehicle, carry written approval from the rental company.

Advance Notification for Rental Vehicles

Many rental and business vehicle providers require explicit approval for each country you intend to enter. This ensures the vehicle is insured for all listed countries, cross-border use is legally permitted, and border authorities can verify vehicle status quickly.

48-hour rule

Provide notice at least 48 hours in advance when planning to cross into Montenegro, Albania, or Serbia. Some companies restrict access to certain countries without prior approval.

Customs Rules and Practical Considerations

Customs regulations between Balkan countries may include limits on alcohol, tobacco, and fuel, as well as restrictions on food products and occasional vehicle inspections. Road infrastructure and driving conditions can also vary significantly:

  • Mountain routes and narrow roads are common, particularly in Montenegro and Albania.
  • Seasonal weather conditions can affect mountain passes—always check before crossing.
  • Plan routes in advance and allow extra travel time, especially for first-time visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Balkan countries can I drive to with a MACK rental car?

Cross-border travel is permitted to the following countries: Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Hungary, Slovenia, and Italy. Other countries may be allowed on request. You must declare every country you plan to visit — any country not written on the contract is a breach of the cross-border clause.

Which countries are strictly not allowed?

The following countries are explicitly prohibited: Kosovo, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia and all former USSR countries, Turkey, and Syria. Driving into any of these countries immediately voids all insurance coverage and breaches the contract.

Is there a fee for cross-border travel?

Yes. A cross-border permit fee applies and is payable at pick-up. It is not included in the base rental rate. Declare your intended countries when booking so everything is prepared before you arrive.

Does my insurance cover me once I cross the border?

Basic third-party liability covers you in all permitted neighbouring countries. CDW and SCDW damage coverage applies within Croatia and the permitted neighbouring countries listed on your contract. Any country not listed on the contract is uninsured.

What happens if my car breaks down across the border?

MACK provides free breakdown assistance. For incidents in neighbouring countries, we will assist and coordinate on your behalf — however the cost of any physical roadside service abroad is at the client's expense. Keep the contact number from your booking confirmation accessible at all times when travelling across borders.

Do I need to carry any special documents at the border?

Yes. Always have your passport (ID cards are not accepted at all crossings), valid driving licence, original vehicle registration, and the rental agreement with cross-border authorisation. Border officials in the region are strict — missing or unclear documents can result in delays or denied entry. Keep everything in one place, not buried in luggage.

When should I notify MACK about cross-border plans?

We just need to know before the car reaches the border — that gives us enough time to add the cross-border permit and confirm insurance coverage for each country. The sooner you tell us the better, but if you decide on a day trip the morning you leave, call us before you set off and we will sort it out.
